Agent Payment2026-09-10 08:21:14Agent-native commerce needs more than payment rails, Waterdrip Capital saysWaterdrip Capital argues that agent payments are moving beyond the idea of adding a checkout button to AI products. In a long-form article published by Foresight, the firm says the real shift is that software is beginning to receive constrained spending authority, allowing agents to discover services, compare quotes, authorize payments within policy limits, and complete purchases during execution rather than before it. The article says payment rails based on HTTP 402 are already emerging. It highlights x402 and MPP as two of the most visible approaches, both trying to make paid API access machine-readable at the protocol layer. But the authors argue that settlement alone does not complete a transaction. What still breaks adoption is the lack of a full buyer-side loop: service discovery, quote normalization, cross-rail liquidity, policy-based authorization, delivery verification, and unified reconciliation. The piece also points to fragmentation across payment rails. Using public data from x402scan and mppscan for the 30 days through Sept. 3, 2026, it says MPP on Tempo had 65,591 active buyer wallets, while x402 on Base had 19,472. Only 365 wallets appeared on both rails, and just 112 completed more than 10 transactions on each, suggesting that each rail is building its own buyer base rather than sharing one common market.1240
